The Days are Long but the Years are Short

Has anyone else been told this phrase since having a child?

As a first time Mum, I can definitely relate. Some days feel more of a struggle than others and that it is never ending. Other days seem to all blur into one – I’ll be honest, I don’t know what day of the week it is half the time! What they all have in common though, is that they are precious moments spent with our little one(s). Time flies when you are having fun, we need to seize each moment.

From crawling to walking, teeth and talking, there are so many ‘first’ moments that we as parents want to treasure, and so we should! We created these little people, we should celebrate everything about them. What might seem trivial to one person, might be a big deal to you. I think sometimes parents compare/compete against each other. Every child develops in their own way, at their own rate. It is hard work for them, learning and developing all at the same time. We just need to help them along the way and enjoy the ride.

I know a lot of parents/family members snap away taking photos and videos. This is great, but at the same time it can feel like you are missing out on actually enjoying the moment itself.

Sometimes it is a physical item that can conjure up a memory rather than photos. First pair of shoes, a certain outfit, favourite teddy or story etc. You can also get your traditional keepsake memory blankets and bears.

But what about other items? I tried searching for something ‘different’ for a keepsake when my little man turned 1. A little gift for me, after all, its birth-day, the Mum plays a big part in that moment! I struggled to find something that caught my eye, so I took this opportunity to experiment and make my own keepsakes. I quickly started incorporating little man’s clothing with everyday items. Keepsakes should be on display, shouting loud and proud the memory you associate with it, not put away for safe keeping and never seeing the light of day again. Also a great little pick-me-up when you are feeling down. You just need to look around you and see the keepsakes that surround you bringing back happy memories. As someone who has PND too, I truly believe this has helped with bonding. What might have been a dark day at the time, can be looked back upon with a new perspective.

My favourite item has to be the clock I made. A way to look both back and forward. Back on memories, forward to exciting plans and adventures still to be had.

Be sure to check out ZaZa’s Storyboxes too. One of my favourite moments at the moment is when little man grabs a book, brings it over to me and sits on my lap for a cuddle while I read. I know I’m biased, but he gives good cuddles!
